Blog wars

My time at the 9-5 recently has been used to keep check on a few issues I posted about previously. I was quite stunned the other day to re-visit onemansgoal to find that a little blog wars had erupted. Words like douchebag and dumbf*ck are being thrown about by Bryan and Vic, whilst the new guy Marc has taken rather an unnecessary amount of flak for his purchase.

This little exchange got me thinking about a number of issues relating to such comments so I rushed off to do my research. First of all, a lot of the comments seem to suggest that Marc paid too much for onemansgoal, but did he? I’ll use DnScoop again to keep the consistency here and my personal opinion is that he did not.

When the site was sold it was estimated at just shy of $8.5k (Marc paid $10.5). Checking today it is now valued at $18,746. Now I’m aware that DnScoop is only an estimate but I do find it to be a fairly accurate tool and looking at that, it seems that the guy has made a pretty solid investement. Granted his Alexa ranking has slipped and no doubt so will his monthly earnings but my point is this…….for all those people who wrote posts slagging Marc off for his investement, it has done no harm to him at all. In fact he got just what he wanted which was an established platform from which he could be heard right away and even if Vics comments were out of order they sure did bring some interest to the site.

My second point refers to a comment that suggested Bryan could sue Vic for slander. Now I don’t know whether it’s due to the fact that I’m English, but that would just never occur to me. Actually, I’m not one for abusing other peoples efforts and quite frankly have better things to do…….. but it does work for Vic. He’s called all sorts of respected people in this industry all sorts of names and got huge amounts of traffic by doing so. I remember a time when making money online was all about helping others to do the same (and lining your ownpockets too). Maybe I’ll waste some time looking into whether or not there is a case here but in the mean time, watch what you say people! Yes, foul mouthed comments will attract visitors but is not the best way to build valuable  and beneficial relationships and if there is a case for slander this opens up a whole new debate.

Anyway, my public sector job (which I am so close to resigning from) has just paid me a nice sum of money while I sat writing this, so I really should get back to some work. There is enough here to think about and I welcome your thoughts on the matter. All comments, both abusive and constructive, will get your site a stumble.
